The View From The Shard, SE1

It's the turn of our tallest venue to have a 'venue of the moment' spotlight on it. The View from the Shard is one of London's most modern landmarks. A combination of commence and tourist traffic, the Shard was designed by Italian Master Architect Renzo Piano.

At a height of up to 800ft or 244m, and at almost twice the height of any other vantage point in London, the venue offers unrivalled venue space for those wishing to celebrate and gaze at all that the capital has to offer. But choosing a venue is often about finding a synergy with a venues story. Here are our favourite facts to tailor to your event searches.

1. It's actually the tallest building in Western Europe

The Shard, at 306 metres tall, briefly held the top spot for the whole of Europe before two buildings in Moscow overtook it within a year! This is a great draw for international crowds!

2. Six women climbed to the top of the building's exterior in July 2013

The Shard was the setting for a Greenpeace protest in July 2013, aiming to draw attention to oil company Shell’s plans to drill for oil in the Arctic. Girl Power at its best! The venue also hosts yoga in the morning, so it's a perfect International Women's Day location.

3. Construction workers found a fox near the top

The fox, nicknamed Romeo by staff, was found on the 72nd storey and is believed to have survived on food left by construction workers. (It's a hard one to think how this matches to an event brief but we love it all the same)

4. The Shard is made up of 11,000 glass panels on its exterior

The building is named as it is modelled on a shard of glass, and its 11,000 panels have a total area of 56,000 square metres.

8. The viewing platform is actually three floors, although one is very weather dependant.

The viewing area is on floors 68, 69 and 72. Floor 68 is home to Cloudscape, a feature about the different types of clouds over London. Floor 69 hosts interactive telescopes, while floor 72 is open to the elements. So it's great to move guests half way through the evening, to showcase a new product or start a separate part of the evening.

9. An impressive 95% of recycled material was utilised throughout the construction.

This is supplemented with 740m2 of photovoltaic equipment, which assists in powering the entire building. So for those of you searching for an environmental build, look no further.

10. Building work started in 2009.

So for all of those companies planning their 10 year anniversaries parties in 2 years' time, this is the venue to start saving for!
